What I find in my car (glc300) is that Eco mode just basically "reduce" the acceleration power. All the ECON button does (apart from lighting up a cute little green leaf that makes you feel kinda warm and fuzzy inside) is adjust the transmission to shift at lower shiftpoints. In Eco mode, the car takes halfway to work to get "comfortable". The key is that the ECON button and the Eco-Assist system are two separate things. Got mileage around 31.5 from car's computer. Your vehicle can completely focus on driving.
What I do is: Normal mode in city road as frequent stops and goes.
The ECON button is not a placebo, though the wording from that specific web page is a bit vague. For the third tank, I turned off Econ and immediately mileage went up to 33.5. I usually turn Eco mode back on after about 2-3 miles. Save cars. I have had to run manually on those -12 days where I have to split it between floor and defrost. I let it run on Auto a lot, so I can't really speak to the fan speed setting. Sometimes the engine failsafe mode is triggered by an actually damaged component, such as an oil pump, timing chain or belt, crankshaft or camshaft, or other internal engine components.
